Alex Groves is a London-based composer working across both acoustic and electronic music, often combining live instrumentalists and singers with richly-textured electronics to create hypnotic and all-enveloping soundworlds.

His music has been commissioned by Sky Arts, the Union Chapel, V&A, Royal Opera House and East London Dance, and supported by Bristol Old Vic, Ovalhouse, Spitalfields Music and Snape Maltings. He's currently Composer-in-Residence at Handel & Hendrix in London and also a LSO Soundhub Associate. His recent work has included number of chamber pieces for his concert series SOLO and larger scale works for the London Contemporary Orchestra and Crash Ensemble.

During his first residency, Groves began working on a new electronic piece that will sample natural sounds collected on the island and transform them into an immersive, multi-channel sound installation, wrapping the listener in layers of recorded and processed sound.

'I spent five days walking along coasts, up and down valleys and through forests listening to and recording the sounds around me. These raw materials will be all that I'll use in the creation of the final piece, creating both an evocation of and a response to our natural world.'

Again, during his second residency, Groves collected natural sounds from around the island to use as part of Sound Design and Composition work and he also used the time to arrange his library of materials and grow his resource base whilst offering an outreach session for Music and Music Technology students at Hautlieu School.
